OUGD406 - Brief 02 - Further Sleeve Designs

OUGD406 - Brief 02 - Variations of Possible Designs

Here I was experimenting with colour and composition to see what my designs would look like once put through the two colour separation process and finally screen printed. I think they look great and I asked for feedback, people said that they thought the pointing finger concept is strong and looked better without the large black border around the edges and I agreed to a certain extent. Personally I think the black border works but its all down to personal taste at the end of the day.

OUGD406 - Brief 02 - Inverted Cover Designs

I inverted these designs just for fun, but I think they look really cool.
I know that I won't be able to achieve the inverted effect using the screen printing process because we limited to only two colours plus stock but I think these designs would work really well if they were digitally printed.

OUGD406 - Brief 02 - Wrap Around Sleve Mock Ups

Various designs for a wrap around cover/dust jacket for my chosen publication. I decided to use quite a lot of white space as I wanted to stay true to the original design and over all aesthetic of Paul Arden's book. The book has a very minimalistic existing feel and I felt like that didn't really needed to be changed. I used Arial throughout the design, as this subtly and in a witty way challenges your initial thoughts towards the designs. In my interim crit, the majority of my class mates thought that I had opted to use Helvetica, as this would have been the obvious choice. However, this book is all about thinking different and challenging pre-existing ideas, so I used a font that is just as appreciated as Helvetica for being a successful Sans Serif.

I am pleased with my final concepts, as I feel they are true to Penguin publications in general, contextually they fit in with Penguins famous aesthetic.

OUGD406 - Brief 02 - Final Three Concepts

Here are a number of variations for possible final resolutions to this brief, where we have to produce a two colour A4 screen print of the final design. I came up with the eye concept at the last minute and I am quite proud of it. However I asked for some informal feedback on these designs in the studio and people said they are a bit sinister and intense and don't really match well with the content of the book its self, and I agree, I just think they are the mos unusual, abstract and exciting designs that I have produced so far within this brief. The pointing finger concept is something I am proud of too but again its a little obvious. At this point I think the fish idea is the most visually pleasing and my strongest concept of the three and I think I am going to take these designs to the screen printing process.
